Spanish Supreme Court bans bull torture

The Spanish Supreme Court has recently delivered a historic verdict banning all activities relates to bull torture at the “Toro de la Vega” festival, thus saving countless animals from great suffering.

“Toro de la Vega” festival was a tradition for men to stab young bulls with spears at the festival in Castilla y León for almost 500 years.

As a result of the pressure put on by Spanish animal welfare organizations such as PACMA and PETA on those responsible, in 2016, the regional government of Castilla y León banned the stabbing of bulls at the festival. But shortly after this groundbreaking decision, Tordesillas City Council appealed to the Supreme Court. Allegedly, there was no reason to prohibit the killings.

This time the Spanish Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal and put an end to the almost 500-year-old animal torture tradition once and for all. The bulls are not only tortured with arrows and spears on the celebration but finally also stabbed. Before that, the tail is cut off alive. In the end, the city council gave the person who killed the suffering animal a ceremonial spear and a medal.

This success is an important milestone in the context of a far-reaching movement that is spreading throughout Spain. More and more people do not want to attend festivals and other events where bulls are tortured in the name of entertainment. Over 100 cities have already banned bullfights. According to a survey, 80% of Spaniards are against these cruel events.

It’s great that more and more cities and regions are banning bullfighting events. But there are still countless bulls suffering for human entertainment. In the case of the so-called “fire bull”, for example, a bull is poured over its head with bad luck and set on fire. Please take part in our call for action against this cruelty to animals.

The Chinese also do horrific things to animals. Especially men to hunting dogs that fail them. Hanging them by their necks on their tippy toes so that when they get tired, they suffocate themselves. What a long agonizing horrific torture. I Hate How CRUEL the human species can be!

And the British, and the Australians, and the Europeans and other Asians…everyone. Animals suffer and die at the hands of humans all over the world.

The British don’t do bull-torture and don’t equate young men chasing and stabbing young bulls and burning them, with fox hunting. Its a whole extra level of evil.

No but they put them in fighting rings and dump them when they can’t perform anymore, trust me that’s torture.

So true. I hate rodeos as well. It’s not fun to lasso a poor calf that is terrified. Bull riding sucks to. Oh and totally ban horse riding. I hate when people use animals for their enjoyment.

Please do not equate rodeos with what goes on in the torture for pleasure that thousands enjoy in Spain. It is far worse. We don’t burn our bulls alive.

Joann Smith

Horse riding is not abuse, unless the rider is simply a bad rider or a cruel person, or maybe obese. I LOVE my horses, they are as pampered as my dogs and cats. If you own a horse, and you care for it daily, you recognize how smart and sweet they are. You might be surprised to know horses will interact with their person very much like dogs do.

Pouring some flammable liquid on a living creatures head?????? I have SO hated the human species for having SUCH a DISREGARD for the feelings of animals. But I am SO GLAD that more and more humans are becoming just as outraged at the thought of hurting innocent creatures. Poor animals. Do your research on how those industries work before calling anyone a dimwit, please. just one tiny example: https://freefromharm.org/dairyfacts/

the industry kills the unwanted male animals, the females are usually held in close quarters and female cows are kept pregnant otherwise they don’t give milk (their young are removed from them after a couple of days so they don’t drink all the milk)

The headline is a bit misleading cause actually they just banned the death of the animal in front of the public in this particular event called “Toro de la vega“ (they still kill it). Otherwise, bullfighting (corridas) is still happening except in a few regions (like Catalonia or the Canary Islands) where the regional parlaments banned it a few years ago.

I have been involved in anti-bullfighting campaigning for many years, but I am afraid there is a lot of false information in this article. First, in the Toro de la Vega never arrows were used, only lances. Second, the only thing that was banned (and which the Supreme Court uphelded now ), was the killing of the bull with lances, but the bull has continued to be chased by the villagers, continued to be exhausted, and continue to be killed (but with a gun now rather than a lance), and the Supreme Court has ruled that all this should continue… Read more »

Is this desicion is base only for Castilla Leon? Or the entire Spain? They prohibited the stubbing but still the bull running in city with fireworks and the coliseo with the horses still on!

There is a way to have humane bullfighting. Instead of stabbing it and torturing it, the bull is encouraged with pheromones from a female cow in estrus. When the bull is too tired to keep running at the matador, or chases the matador out, then the “fight” is over. This way, the animal is not stabbed or tortured. Nothing pierces its skin. It just runs at the person with the cape until its tired or it gets its horns into the person. Still dangerous for the human, but safe for the animal. Once it’s over, the animal is lead away,… Read more »

At least that would be fair. I know someone will say the bull might not want to play that game, but if people are dumb enough to risk getting wounded, and others will pay to watch, as long as the animal is not harmed, fine with me. I have better things to do. Half the proceeds should go to an animal protection charity, lol!

BOYCOTT SPAIN AND IT’S PRODUCTS FOREVER.

They still hang 200.000 Galgo dogs a year.

Bullfighting Corrida is still practised in Portugal and TEXAS.

In France they have matadorschools for CHILDREN.

Please sign and share petitions for poor Bulls in PETA and CHANGE.

What the law says is that the bull cannot be killed in public. The bull dies anyway either is a bullfight or in a PRIVATE toro de la vega event, later that same day.. and he is speared at least once.. something like a Satanic ritual. This is how this year’s bull died.

I am glad that we’re finally began to realize the horrific act we’re doing to these vulnerable animals. This inhumane and gruesome festivity must stop. People don’t value the lives of these animals and it’s barbaric to use them as entertainment. It’s like when the Gladiators in ancient Rome slaughtered animals and slaves for the sake of pleasure. After centuries, I can’t believe human civilization still continue with this senseless cruelty to animals. Think you own whatever land you land on. The earth is just a dead thing you can claim. But I know every rock and tree and creature… Read more »

Great Job done by the supreme court. I see great wisdom in the supreme court for putting an end to the 500 years old tradition of animal torture. In terms of fear and pain, both human and animals have same suffering. And this ban from the supreme court will send clear message to the rest of the world to bring end of animal torture and suffering.

Cuidado!!!.

All animals deserve to be treated with respect and kindness and compassion and men should not interfere with their natural habitat unless to help them. All animals are innocent and never cause problems; it’s humans that causes pain and suffering towards animals! Lord please have mercy on all animals and save them from pain and suffering caused by humans.

Finally a break in killing old traditions that have no place in the 21st century. May they completely ban every event torturing bulls and horses for entertainment. And may they humanely treat the remaining bulls. Thank goodness some in Spain have compassion.

Ken

Obvious to anyone with compassion, is the horrific ordeal the tortured bulls endure. The less obvious effect is the psychological damage that is done to the humans who participate or witness these public atrocities. They become conditioned to believe that animals are simply inanimate objects without feelings or value. This facilitates the perpetuation of these hateful practices. So, why aren’t the religious leaders of Spain standing up to end this ignorance?

At long last, I hope all activities that involve a bull being tortured and eventually killed is banned soon. Men do not have to prove their ‘manliness’ by do this to a helpless animal 😒

Human violence is rooted in violence to animals. ‘Sport’ hunting keeps appetites whetted and weapons ready to be aimed at fellow humans. Every one of us has an inner instinct to kill; it doesn’t need to be fed.
